Challenge / Goal
StreetCAV set out to deliver these goals:
Establishment of a new self-driving shuttle service and Smart City Control Centre in Central Milton Keynes as a first step to operating these services city-wide, promoting passenger choice and enriching passenger experiences in a way that is accessible, easy to use and integrated with the wider transport network
Development of ubiquitous, extremely high density, ultra-low latency street-side connectivity optimised to support self-driving shuttles that is easy to deploy invisibly along the route and provides a platform for delivery of other services in the future, in urban, sub-urban and rural environments.
Development of a value-added, safety platform that offers advanced situational awareness and monitoring capabilities that build public trust in the new self-driving shuttles by connecting vehicles, roadside sensors and traffic signals as part of a co-operative, intelligent traffic management system
Solution
We established a global consortium to develop the solution. This included companies located in the nearby innovation corridor as well as global organisations seeking to establish their UK headquarters in Milton Keynes in order to develop their local supply chain for both the UK and Europe. Together with national telecommunications providers and a number of small and medium sized enterprises we worked together to design, develop and test the solution using a range of proving, testing and staging facilities available nearby. The City Council played a pivotal role in creating and investing in the environment in which the team could innovate, push the technical boundaries of the different components and enable the new self-driving shuttle service to be deployed safely and securely into Central Milton Keynes, using shared public highways to deliver the new shuttle operation. StreetCAV also used the wider Smart City testbed developed and operated by the City Council. This highly advanced testbed offers unparraleled access to Smart City technology and includes a private 5G network, connected sensors and signals and advanced Smart City Data Exchange platforms and other applications to promote the ongoing development of Smart City technology for the benefit of the city, its citizens, visitors and businesses.
Citizen participation
As part of the project, the City Council is undertaking extensive local engagement and consultation activities, testing peoples perceptions and trust in the self-driving shuttles, promoting the experience and adapting plans based on feedback, as well as work with local educators to engage students in the data science and related aspects of the technology. These outreach activities are centred on the newly established Smart City Experience Centre, located in centre:mk, one of the UK's major retail shopping outlets. This new Smart City Experience Centre is designed to excite and engage members of the public, national and local decision-makers and other key stakeholders in the new Smart City deployments and promote the benefits of working together in Milton Keynes, promoting the work of the team and reaffirming Milton Keynes reputation as an 'urban laboratory' at the forefront of introducing new technology for the benefit of the city, its citizens and our technology partners.
