Challenge / Goal

With 1 in 2 adults suffering from loneliness, current services and social media are not enough to promote citizen activity and community engagement in neighborhoods. Additionally, there are challenges related to social integration and community support that existing solutions fail to address. It is crucial to find innovative ways to connect residents and foster a sense of belonging and mutual assistance within communities.

Solution

The solution was to create a platform that facilitates community support and connections. This was achieved through Commu, a Finnish peer support app that makes it easy for residents to find and offer help.

Kristiinankaupunki collaborated with Commu to build a stronger, more community-minded municipality. The app is free to use and aims to help residents connect for various activities, such as finding a running buddy, chatting buddy, assistance for charity work, or a pet shelter. Residents can also volunteer for tasks like carpooling, snow shovelling, peer support, or yard work assistance.

As a Cittaslow City, Kristiinankaupunki is committed to enhancing the well-being of its residents and strengthening community ties. In 2024, the city will celebrate its 375th anniversary, highlighting the importance of community, mutual support, and collective efforts to improve the quality of life. The platform is intended for use by all residents, associations, and other stakeholders to foster new forms of community interaction and support.

Citizen participation

Citizens participated by actively using the Commu app to connect with each other and perform good deeds. Through the platform, residents were able to offer and seek help within their community, reducing loneliness and fostering a stronger sense of community. The app encouraged residents to engage in activities such as volunteering, providing peer support, and participating in community events.
