Challenge / Goal

Managing the flow of delivery vehicles on a busy campus presents several issues. There is often a lack of clear guidelines for using the loading spot, which leads to congested logistics and safety concerns. Additionally, obstructed pathways cause inefficiencies and accessibility problems, particularly for students with disabilities.

Under the EIT Urban Mobility Call for Innovation 2023, the city of Riga and the RTU Campus faced difficulties in managing loading and unloading near central university buildings. Inefficient use of parking spots for logistics operations, a lack of a system for booking and managing unloading bays, and safety concerns due to improper parking and unloading activities were some of the challenges.

Solution

Introducing our campus Smart Zone, this solution provides clear guidelines for using the loading spot, streamlining logistics, and enhancing safety. By organising the flow of delivery vehicles, we ensure smoother traffic and unobstructed pathways. This solution not only improves efficiency but also makes the campus more inclusive and accessible for everyone.

To address these issues, the city of Riga and the RTU Campus partnered with Coding the Curbs. They transformed two parking spots close to one of the central university buildings into a bookable and geofenced unloading bay, allowing logistics operators to book these spots in advance to ensure a safe parking spot for loading and unloading. A solar-powered Smart Sign was also installed to display availability and upcoming bookings and facilitate ad-hoc bookings and enforcement.
