Challenge / Goal
Continuous faults have appeared in the district heating system during the last few years, due to the obsolescence of the original system. An improvement of energy efficiency was needed.
The problems encountered with the old system included corrosion, leaks and heat losses from the appliances being used.
Solution
The systems overall energy efficiency has been improved through a complete renovation.
This includes a replacement of the generation plant with new biomass-fired boilers, a new variable-flow pumping system and a complete renewal of the distribution network with new pre-insulated pipes and a leak detection system.
Additionally, a renovation was done of the heat exchange substations in the buildings with a centralisation of the domestic hot water (DHW) production in the same district heating and finally an installation of heat cost allocators in the dwellings.
